Part Two

Death and Poison

FOUR YEARS AFTER

KAEL

They did this…

The voice hissed in my ear, its truth ringing with an addicting cadence.

“They did…” I repeated in a whisper, clutching my arms as I sat in the empty abyss of blackness. The floor holding me was invisible to the eye, as if made of glass. I rubbed the raised lines of skin along my brow. Dream’s seal. The reason I was trapped in here. How long had it been now…? How many centuries have passed?

They will bring the End…

“The End…” I mimicked as the voice rang in my mind. I didn’t know if it was a real voice speaking to me, or if it was my own thoughts manifesting from my fractured subconscious.

We will bring the world Sanctuary…

“We will… bring Sanctuary…” I sucked in a deep inhale, craning my head up to look at the endless void of nothingness above me.

We will kill those who have wronged us…

My fingers clenched over my arms, claws puncturing flesh. “Death… Dream… All of them…”

Yes… and the Shadowblood…

“Shadowblood… once we’re… f-f… free…” The last word was little more than a seething breath, almost foreign. “Free…”

Soon, dear Kael… We will find our freedom…

“S-s-s… soon…” My throat tightened, breaking into a sob. I screamed at the empty abyss. “You’ve said this for centuries…! When is morning?! When is night?! How much longer will your ‘soon’ last in this miserable, timeless pit?!”

I had lost my sense of time hundreds of years ago. I couldn’t even tell when I was dreaming or awake in this place. Aspirre had no need of these trivial differences. Everything was real here… yet, nothing was real. What even was real? None of it seemed to matter.

Screeches sounded around me.

They were hideous sounds, like nails skidding against glass. The noise festered in my ears, which grew with fur as my cat ears folded down in fright.

I squinted, spying a faint, blackened form shifting against the dark landscape of nothingness. The form was difficult to see, but I could barely make out its sand-like features.

I scrambled to my feet. “The Noctis Golems…!”

Several more forms appeared from the darkness, the sandy creatures multiplying the longer I looked into the void. Their grains sifted and poured nauseatingly, never staying true to a single shape.

They were drawing nearer.

I broke into a sprint, rushing to get away. Their grating screeches rattled my ears—

A new pain split across my forehead—where Dream’s seal was branded. The seal burned and pulsed, bringing me to my knees on the invisible floor, howling with agony. A glare spilled from the seal. A rush of energy peeled through my flesh.

I curled into a ball, screaming as the pain worsened.

My skin gleamed with an azure light. The light brightened, growing stronger, blinding me with a burning sting as it flooded the terrain in a terrible flash—
